Recovery through long-term care in residential communities
A dementia village is a specially designed residential community for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. It provides a safe, structured, and familiar environment where residents can move freely while receiving personalized care.
Evidence Base
There is a strong intuitive appeal to the benefits arising from a model of self-contained communities that need specialised care and engagement, such as Dementia villages. While further evaluations of the impact and scalability of these initiatives are required, there are multiple emerging models in the Netherlands (Dementia Village Associates, 2024) and, most recently, in Canada (Wilson, 2023) with the public long-term care home that is accessible to all.
