Trauma-Informed Teaching
Ages 6 – 14
A school-based program to reduce stress by informed teaching practices
Reducing stress through informed teaching practices in the classroom
Trauma-informed teaching provides a nurturing and emotionally supportive environment to help children, especially those exposed to trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and discrimination. It trains teachers to reduce student stress, build resilience, and respond effectively to the needs of children experiencing trauma.
Evidence Base
Trauma-informed teaching can help reduce stress to children by providing a nurturing and emotionally supportive environment by the teacher, especially for those exposed to trauma–adverse childhood experiences and discrimination based on caste and sexuality (Franco, 2023; Mathias et al., 2015; Uddin et al., 2020). From a systematic review, several studies show that teachers improve students’ resilience process (Garay et al., 2022) and can extend their role, with adequate training, to reduce stress for children experiencing trauma and respond to their needs more effectively (Wood, 2021).
