Evidence Base
Workfare programs like NREGS improve living conditions and access to essential services and act as a protective factor against adverse childhood experiences (Felitti et al., 1998) (such as inadequate food, clothing, and shelter). NREGS, National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, guarantees the "right to work" for at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. This program in India has positive effects on mental health and other well-being outcomes by reducing the incidence of depression by 12% (Ravi & Engler, 2015).
